Sun Safety Tips for a Healthy Summer
Though my college winters were beautiful they were long and cold, and I longed for sunny days.
As soon as the snow melted away and the sun was warm enough to enjoy without a sweater, I would join countless other college students for a few hours of sunbathing on the lawn, whenever time permitted. The sun felt wonderfully delicious and I loved the golden hue on my skin.
The same scene plays out in colleges around the nation to this day. And just as I was then, most college students today are oblivious to the potential damage they are doing to their skin.
Yet we know that sun damage is one of the leading contributors to some of the most devastating forms of skin cancer. And with skin cancer being the most common type of cancer in the United Stated today, this should be of grave concern to us all.
Here are simple ways you can enjoy the sun this summer without risking any damage to your skin:
Wear a hat
Wide brim hats are super fashionable and offer wonderful protection from damaging sun rays, so go ahead and treat yourself to a fun hat or two and make a healthy statement as you strut your stuff in the sun.

Stay in the shade
I love the sun and getting a nice golden hue on my skin, but let’s be honest, staying in the hot sun for an extended period of time is not exactly comfortable. It’s hot and it’s sweaty! Bring a sun shade to the beach or pool or lounge under a lush green tree at the park and turn your outdoor adventure into a much cooler and pleasant one.
Stay indoors when the sun is the hottest
Early morning and evening are the best times to be outdoors. The sun is lower and less hot, and UV radiation not as strong. As an added bonus the places you’ll want to enjoy will most likely be a lot less crowded in the earlier parts of the day when everyone else is sleeping in.
What do you do with the rest of your day? Spend some quality time at the library or visit your local museums… Invite a bunch of friends for a couple hours of paint ball… Throw a craft day and home and enjoy refreshing drinks and snacks while letting your creativity soars. And if nothing else seems to capture your attention enjoy a matinée at the movies. You’ll save money and won’t have to worry about crowds 🙂
